Cyrie:

by Margaret Atwood

PLOT:

Set in a dystopian vision of North America, society has been taken over by religious zealots who have founded the Republic of Gilead. In this republic, the bible is used as a means of repressing and controlling women for the purposes of breeding. The handmaid of the title is known now only as Offred (her real, pre-Gileadean name is never exposed), and her role in this new society is as a 'vessel' for barren wives. Handmaids are ritualized surrogate mothers who live in family households and provide a 'vessel' for the husband's sperm - any babies born then become the property of the wive and the handmaid is moved onto another household. In this environment, Offred dreams of escape and rebellion even as she submits to the routine imposed upon her.

OFFRED:

Offred is a woman who clearly remembers the pre-Gileadean society (which is essentially the same as late 20th century America). Seperated from her husband and young daughter by the Gileadeans, she and women like her are subjected to a training/brainwashing regime for the vocation of handmaid and then packed off to different households. Offred's dearest memories and the source of her ability to resist the indoctrintion process are the recollections of three important females in her life: her radical feminist mother, who seems to have been part of the 1960s/70s feminist movement; her young daughter, and her feminist, rebellious friend Moira.

WOMEN IN GILEADEAN SOCIETY:

Women are segregated into colour-coded roles:
* Handmaids (red) - women who have proved to be fertile, often also the ones who pose the biggest threat to the republic's repression of sex and sexuality. Handmaids are perhaps the most scorned of the female groups in the republic.
* Wives (blue) - live lives of dull, polite monotony, knitting, going to each other's houses to gossip, occasionally sharing the excitement of a birth.
* Econowives (multi-coloured stripes) - poor wives who cannot afford servants.
* Marthas (green) - servants.
* Daughters (white)
* Aunts (can't remember colour - brown?) - the women who run the indoctrination centres for handmaids.

Plot Devices that Make You Roll Your Eyes
* a woman character is raped or is in danger of being raped -- the eternal rapability of female characters

* a female character dies in childbirth

* "convenient" circumstances prevent a female character from going through with her decision to have an abortion (cf. Robin in V, whose alien hybrid fetus's invasive vascularisation made it impossible to remove without killing her; spontaneous miscarriages and so forth) -- therefore rendering women's reproductive choices inconsequent when that oh-so-controversial subject is broached

* using female characters to voice misogynistic and/or patriarchal ideas because it would be "too obvious" to use male characters -- victim-blaming, in short

* using evolutionary biology or the selfish gene theory as the primary reason a male and female character are drawn together sexually (Darwin's Radio by Bear), or why a female character cannot possibly resist the man's man that will make the best sire of her children (Lucifer's Hammer by Niven)

* perky secretaries that are more competent than any of the male authority figures but who are happy to remain assistants, though it's the year 2500 and in space...

* innocent and universally loveable female characters that do not develop a sex drive or sex appeal until they turn evil (Doppleganger Willow from earlier in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fred from Angel) - correlated with the amount of cleavage/leg shown.

* alien women of ANY species will inevitably be irresistably attracted to the only mid-30s male on a particular starship (Star Trek, I'm looking at YOU) - even if it causes an interstellar incident
** related: females of alien species always have extremely large breasts, located in the exact same location as those of human females (i.e. they look exactly like human women except for a charming set of pointy ears, forhead ridges or swirly haircut that serves only to make them more exotic to the male characters)

I have added in some boilerplate text, and I am looking into the template issue. I had hoped it would be a straightforward editing of the stylesheets that could change the look and feel of the page, but it appears that it's not that simple - it involves editing the code, the CSS and one other file that has slipped my mind. I took at look at the other user designed pages to see if there was another version that could be used as a starting point, but they were all minor variations of the mediawiki stock or very extreme. I'll keep looking and adding relevant standard text warnings as I code them up. For now, I'm just pulling over the relevant ones from Wikipedia, but I would think that there are going to be some standardized text messages ("this page discusses a controversial theory", "this page needs to be cleaned up to remove anti-feminist messaging" or whatever) that we'll want for this wiki that isn't on wikipedia. If you have suggestions for warnings or standardized text, please place them here and I can create them. Cyrie 18:25, 5 May 2006 (PDT)
