The Rule, also called "Dykes To Watch Out For test" ("DTWOF test" for short), the "Alison Bechdel test", or, inaccurately, the "Mo Movie Measure", is a standard that requires that a movie satisfy "three basic requirements":

# It has to have at least two women in it,
# Who talk to each other,
# about something besides a man.

This principle was established by Liz Wallace, a friend of the cartoonist Alison Bechdel. Bechdel used it in a Dykes To Watch Out For comic strip in 1985, and it has since entered into popular use.

The Rule originally only served as a movie-going principle, but its application has been extended to gauge movies, and assorted publications in general, from a feminist perspective. Whether or not a movie, book, or television show meets the Rule, or passes the DTWOF test, is helpful in determining women's importance in relation to each other within the work in question. Failure to meet the Rule is a strong indication that female characters are under-characterized or under-developed in the work. Rather than being seen as whole individuals, such under-developed female characters may only be stand-ins for generic female roles: wife, girlfriend, daughter, helpful subordinate, etc. These female characters may be relevant or interesting to the story only insofar as their characters are involved with or commenting on the men in their lives. Their essential characters or attributes are under-developed, leading to an artistically crippled work.

This is a list of works written by women and eligible for SF awards to be given out in 2009 based on works published from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2008. Awards that follow this eligibility format include the Hugo, the Campbell, the World Fantasy Award, the Tiptree, and the Phillip K. Dick. (The Nebulas have a rolling period of eligibility for nomination based on the specific date a work was published.) We're listing these works as a form of award activism: to bring them greater attention, to share information about them for ourselves, and to help avoid problems like the 2006 Hugo vacuum. See Eligibility and voting by award for a quick index of information about individual awards, and links to the individual award pages for more detail.

Please include here any eligible work, along with the relevant information: title, publication date, and format. For novels, it's useful to search Amazon for the author's name: the list of works has publication date and format right there.

Note: Some awards are based on first publication and other awards are based on first publication in the US, England, etc. If a work was first published outside of the time period but would be eligible for some awards, please add it and add in parentheses any restrictions or explanations about eligibility.
Descriptions/pull quotes
This page is of course great as a reminder for people who've already read various works and just need their memory jogged. But it occurs to me that for people who are looking for stories to read, it might be neat to add a little more info for these works, to give those readers more than a title and author to go by. If the story has a pull quote (as SH stories do), we could use that; otherwise perhaps a one-sentence description or teaser, or a line from a review, or whatever. It would be a huge amount of work to do this for all stories, of course, but it could be done piecemeal--anyone who has a review or a description could add it at any time. What do y'all think? One potential disadvantage: might clutter up the page. ...I apologize if this comes across as self-serving (because the SH stories already have pull quotes so it would be very easy for me to add those to the page); it would benefit SH, certainly, but I think it would also benefit other publications, 'cause I as a reader am more likely to seek something out if it has an intriguing description or pull quote than if I'm going by just the author and title. But maybe guiding readers to works isn't part of the purpose of this page? Not sure. --Elysdir 18:30, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Italics for story titles
I just removed the italics from the short-story titles. If they were intentional, I apologize. I would say they don't need to be set off in this context, but if they do, consider using quotation marks instead of italics. --Elysdir 18:21, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Elysdir: /* Short Stories */ Adding Strange Horizons stories

Characters whose work explicitly involves sexual behavior or sexual performance. Includes people who provide sexual services for money or professionally, e.g., whores, prostitutes, streetwalkers, escorts, courtesans, callboys, gigolos; sex performers; and people who do sexual performance for money or professionally, e.g., strippers, porn actors, lapdancers, nude or pinup boy models, etc.

In human society, these roles are disproportionately gendered, with females providing the labor and males acting as consumers and largely controlling the labor market. Men, especially young men and boys, are a minority of the labor market; adult men are the majority of the consumers. SF that alters this gendered norm is of particular interest.

Characters here are not female; they could be male or they could be other-gendered.
* Jacqueline Carey. Kushiel's Dart (2001) & sequels - Story focuses on a girl, but in the first story a boy is also important.
* Jayge Carr. Leviathan's Deep (1979). Not a major theme, but there are definitely whores -- they're male. The society isn't primarily capitalist, so it may be that they are fulfilling religious service more than for money.
* Samuel R. Delany. Hustlers and other male sex-workers figure prominently in several of his works, perhaps most notably in the Neveryon series.
* Mercedes Lackey. One of the Gryphon books have a sex-worker (Amberdrake, a "kestra'chern") as a protagonist; these particular sex-workers are respected in society, and are combination therapist / sex therapist / masseur, and are of both sexes. Examples of that profession crop up in other of her later Valdemar works. This is also one of the rare examples of a male sex worker in SF.
* Charles Oberndorf. Sheltered Lives (1992). After the spread of "hives," a deadly STD, the government sets up shop with licensed sexual service workers.
* Mike O'Driscoll. "The Future of Birds". Story is about a transsexual Latina MTF.
* Sarah Waters. Tipping the Velvet (It's not fantasy/sf, but readers of fantasy might well like it; the London of the early 20th century is pratically fantastic. This is a lesbian picaresque novel & well worth reading. The butch female character is passing as a male during her sex worker stint.
Eligibility and voting by award
Hugo
Eligible works are those first published in the previous calendar year in the United States of America. Works are nominated and voted on by anyone who is a "supporting" or attending member of the previous Worldcon or the Worldcon that will hand out the award that year. For the 2008 awards, members of either the Japan or Denver Worldcons can nominate and vote. The 2008 Hugos will be awarded August 9th, 2008, in Denver, Colorado.

Campbell
Not to be confused with the Campbell Memorial award, the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer is for a writer whose first work of science fiction or fantasy was published in the previous two calendar years. It is nominated, voted on, and awarded by the Worldcon membership exactly like the Hugos are, except that the work can have been published anywhere in the world.

World Fantasy
The World Fantasy Award is for works published anywhere in the world in the previous year. Works are nominated and voted on by a small panel of judges which differs every year. For the 2007 awards, the judges were announced in late February 2007, and the announcement noted that all materials sent to them must be received by June 1; it will probably be similar for the 2008 awards. The 2008 awards will be given out at the World Fantasy Convention, on Sunday afternoon, November 2, 2008, in Alberta. After much searching, I still can't tell if the attendees of the WFC get any say in the awards.

Tiptree
The James Tiptree, Jr. Award is for a work of any form published anywhere in the world "which expands or explores our understanding of gender". Works published in 2007 will be given a 2007 award in 2008. "Anyone and everyone" is encouraged to nominate works using the web form on the tiptree.org website. Awards are decided by a panel of five judges which differs every year. The winners will be announced in March of 2008 and the awards presented at Wiscon on May 24, 2008.

Philip K. Dick
The Philip K. Dick Award is for science fiction published originally in paperback form. Works published in 2007 will be given a 2007 award in 2008. Awards are decided by a small panel of judges which changes every year. The judges for 2007's books are: Steve Miller, Chris Moriarty, Steven Piziks, Randy Schroeder, and Ann Tonsor Zeddies. The award will be given at Norwescon, March 20-23, 2008, in Seattle.

Campbell Memorial
The John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel is for a novel published anywhere in the world in the previous year. It is awarded by a small, persistent jury, consisting of: Gregory Benford, Paul A. Carter, James Gunn, Elizabeth Anne Hull, Christopher McKitterick, Farah Mendlesohn, Pamela Sargent, and T.A. Shippey. Books are nominated in December of their eligible year by the jurors, and potentially by publishers (Chris McKitterick invites contact on the Campbell Memorial website). Finalists are announced in April, and the winner determined in May. The award is handed out on the 4th of July weekend at the Campbell Conference Awards Banquet at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.

Sturgeon
The Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award is for a short story published anywhere in the world in the previous year. It is awarded by a small, persistent jury, consisting of: James Gunn, Kij Johnson, Frederik Pohl, George Zebrowski, and Noel Sturgeon. It is nominated, voted on, and awarded exactly like the Campbell Memorial Awards are, except that Chris McKitterick invites "a wide variety of science-fiction reviewers and serious readers", as well as editors, to send in nominations.

Nebula
Voted and presented by the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA).
Romantic fantasy
These works will all be reprinted in Best New Romantic Fantasy (2007 edition), but again I figured that's not a category that the Hugos normally go for (Asaro notwithstanding), so I'm putting them in a separate category (except for the ones that already appeared in other categories earlier on this list).

And these ones will be reprinted in Year's Best Fantasy & Horror, in the horror half, so I wasn't sure whether to list them above or not.
