He is the Headmaster of the Hogwards School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

On October 19, 2007, during Q&A with her fans following a reading from ''[[Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows|The Deathly Hallows]]'', at Carnegie Hall in New York City, [[J.K. Rowling|Rowling]] revealed that Dumbledore was [[gay]].

In the film adaptations of ''Harry Potter'', Dumbledore has been played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.

== Character sketch ==

Albus Dumbledore was the founder of the Order of the Phoenix, which fought Voldemort and his followers during the Death Eaters' first and second rise to power, and is the only wizard Voldemort ever feared. (He was also one of Voldemort's teachers before the young Tom Marvolo Riddle changed his name to Lord Voldemort.)

Dumbledore was the one who placed Harry Potter to be raised by Lily Potter's sister and sister's husband (Harry's aunt and uncle) after Voldemort killed Harry's parents, Lily and James. He became a protector and a mentor to Harry, but also withheld information from him, as part of his plans to overcome Voldemort, which inevitably involved Harry.

In the sixth book of the series, Albus Dumbledore was killed by Severus Snape, but his legacy continued to play a vital part in the seventh and final book, and in Voldemort's eventual destruction.

In his youth, Albus fell in love with Gellert Grindelwald, another wizard, and Albus was the one who defeated Grindlewald when Grindelwald turned to evil.
