Sketch of the entry, which has been giving me headaches for months, whenever I'd start trying to write it up.

New page

Gender generally refers to the social characteristics linked to the sexes, but the origin of gender division, and its relationship to the oppression of women, are still subject to dispute.

What is gender? Where does it come from?
History of the concept
Gender is a concept that has evolved out of the necessity to distinguish social differences between the sexes from biological differences. It is a refinement on the concept of sex roles, which Margaret Mead, among other, used in the study of anthropology, and is its sociological heir, and one of the key concepts of feminist theory.

Ann Oakley's Sex, Gender and Society (1972) was one of the first works to study gender.

Naturalist Analysis
The naturalist view of gender is that biology gives rise to social differences. It rests on the assumption that sex preceeds gender. Under a naturalist view, the male and female genders are additive and complementary. Men and women are fundamental, intemporal categories. They can exist separate from each other, because they are not defined by each other.

This is the view of the dominant ideology.

Materialist Analysis
The materialist view of gender, as put forward by Christine Delphy, among others, is the opposite of the naturalist view.

Gender is a class system, created by the division of human societies into groups so that one group can exploit another. Each group is defined by its relationship to the other, and neither can exist on its own, because they only come into being as a result of their relationship. This is a holist, or constructivist view, following the principles of historical materialism.

#In order to exploit people, it is necessary to create a hierarchy.
#The creation of a hierarchy requires a social division.
#In order to divide people it is necessary to find characteristics that differentiate them.
#The characteristics in question mark a person's appartnance to a class.
#Class status gives the physical characteristics marking them a tremendous importance, because they reflect social differences.

Sex is the physical characteristic for gender. It is, in and of itself, no more important than any other physical trait which sets an individual apart from the others (see race for another example), but derives its enormous social importance from the social division it marks, for the status it signifies, and which it also reflects and justifies in ideology. And, because it will define a person's social class, the fact of gender preceeds the fact of sex.

Gender is thus the system of oppression of one sex by the other, and, since the oppressors are male, gender can therefore be considered synonymous to patriarchy.

Delphy (2001), p.52-53, writes:
The confusion between sex and gender exists in SF as it does within society, and therefore leads to stories that blur the line between the two, as well as stories that seek to clarify the difference.
