Categories for this entry... and also: Barbara as protagonist

New page

I put in the category "Doctor Who episodes" as well as that of "Doctor Who serial" because "An Unearthly Child" is the title of the very first individual episode, but that'll probably mean I'll need to edit the info for :Category:Doctor Who episodes -- and it's all very confusing, due to the multiple format changes the show has undergone. (I mean -- the Christmas Specials and Children in Need special and so forth will probably require further categorising... and the TV movie, and then there are all the other tie-ins and semi-official stories...)

The interesting thing, though, about "An Unearthly Child", is that it establishes Barbara as the series's protagonist. She's the one who initiates the adventure, and gets her friend Ian to tag along. The Doctor's not the hero yet, although he is the title character. He's just the weird old man who kidnaps these two ordinary Londoners, the mysterious stranger who makes their adventures possible, and Susan's frail, trouble-making grandfather. So the designation of "companion" doesn't fit so well for Barbara, and "assistant", even less. --Ide Cyan 18:56, 26 June 2007 (PDT)
