			When [[Miles Vorkosigan]] first encounters '''Taura''' in the novelette "Labyrinth," in ''[[Borders of Infinity]]'', she is a prisoner in House Bharaputra on the planet of Jackson's Whole. Genetically engineered to be a super-soldier, she is about eight feet tall, with fangs and claws. She was originally one of a troop of her kind, but the fast metabolism which fuels their strength has killed off all the others.

			Miles finds Taura in a hopeless state: she knows that she's dying, she's imprisoned by her makers, and she is suffering a world-class case of teenage angst about being lovable (in an eight-foot tall woman, this can be world-class indeed). Miles not only guides her through a rescue which he could not manage without her, he also sees her as the ultimate tall, strong woman of his dreams, and beds her, to her astonishment and (eventually) their mutual delight.

			After the escape, she becomes a member of Miles' mercenary troop, and eventually they part company when Miles drops his mercenary cover identity and returns permanently to Barrayar. She figures again in the novelette ''Winterfair Gifts,'' when she comes to the planet of Barrayar for Miles' wedding to [[Ekaterin Vorsoisson]].
