It was first published, anonymously, in 1777 as &quot;The Champion of Virtue&quot;, and then republished in 1778. <br /> <br /> <br /> &lt;blockquote&gt;The first gothic novel written by a woman is Clara Reeve&#039;s 1777 &#039;&#039;The Champion of Virtue&#039;&#039; (later renamed &#039;&#039;The Old English Baron: A Gothic Story&#039;&#039;).
