Comic relief is an element or a character that functions to relieve the dramatic tension in a story via humor.
Comic relief characters
Comic relief characters are rarely female, unless they fall into stereotypes and clichés about women.
Examples of humourous female characters who are portrayed as more than a joke in themselves include:
- Cordelia Chase and Anya Jenkins, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series).
- Jool, on Farscape.
- Gabrielle on Xena: Warrior Princess - began as a comic relief sidekick but the show quickly developed into being as much about her quest as it was about Xena's; however she could sometimes still be a comic relief character; see, e.g., "The Play's the Thing", a fourth season episode
