Talk:List of feminist and female writers

what is this the author list of? every author mentioned in the wiki? feminist sf authors? recommended feminist sf authors? women authors? (no because there are already some men on there) ... maybe the author list should be an automatically generated list based on categories. i know that there has been a lot of debate in wikipedia about the various "lists of" things; i wonder if there is something fruitful in those debates in terms of figuring out whether or not individually created lists that are not comprehensive are very helpful. wikipedia wants lists to either be comprehensive or selective. ... just thinking. I started this list (of spanish/portugese language writers) by going through back issues of Axxon. We could integrate it with the list above, and tag everyone by country/language/region. But I think best not to integrate the list as these are writers who are women and not ones that anyone has particularly labelled as feminist. --Liz Henry 22:50, 12 June 2006 (PDT)

Well this is sort of what I was getting at in the preceding comment. Because the current lists includes some men, and also some writers in other languages (e.g., Elisabeth Vonarburg). Should there be separate pages for "feminist writers", "writers (English lang.)", "writers (French lang.)" etc. (and what should that standard be, btw? because "lang" is English-based). And, if there are such separate pages, can they all be automatically generated by including categories on each author's page. The downside of that is

• (A) categories are supposed to work by listing the MOST SPECIFIC category--so, "women writers of the 20th century" for instance or "women writers of SF" but then one can't easily (as far as I know) generate a complete list of ALL "writers" (maybe mediawiki does have a way to aggregate all the material from a category AND its subcategories but I doubt it, because the subcategory structure is very fluid, and the list could easily infinitely loop) and then the other problem is
• (B) if a writer is LACKING such a tag they won't show up in the category, and we won't know it. That could be true at any point, of course, but at least if we generate lists ourselves, people can start the page from the author-list; which I think minimizes the chance of a writer getting "lost".

Maybe I'm just running up against the limitations of a wiki vs. a database. Anybody with more wiki experience care to address these issues? Or go research them in the wiki? LQ 05:12, 13 June 2006 (PDT)

In keeping with Liz's suggestion at Talk:Race and feminist SF I was thinking that I would love to have many more lists of writers -- here are some:

• List of self-identified feminist writers
• List of self-identified antiracist writers
• List of SF writers whose works frequently engage gender and sexism (that seems like a long title - better idea?)
• List of SF writers whose works frequently engage ethnicity and racism (same question - better short title?)
• List of pre-20th century SF writers whose works engage gender and sexism
• List of pre-20th century SF writers whose works engage race and racism
• List of female SF writers whose works engage fascism and state oppression
• List of female SF writers whose works engage class

... etc. Other ideas?
