The Clewiston Test is a science fiction novel by Kate Wilhelm, published in 1976. The novel depicts the struggle of a woman scientist to protect her work from the influence of corporate greed and incompetence, and in the face of sexism.
Plot and spoilers
In the course of the novel, her husband (also a scientist, and one of her co-workers) turns against her. He also rapes her.
Publication history
The book's original editor said he would not publish the book with the rape in it. Rather than rewrite it, Wilhelm withdrew the book and found another publisher for it.
Intertextuality
Joanna Russ's novel, The Two of Them, makes a direct allusion to The Clewiston Test.
