Xena & Gabrielle encounter Najara, a Jeanne d'Arc-like figure, who seems to bring great spirituality and love to her quest against evil. Does she offer another way for Gabrielle?
Notes (& spoilers)
Xena doesn't fully buy in to Najara's ideas, but comes to feel she is sincere enough for Gabrielle to stay with.
After Xena discovers that Najara kills people who won't convert "to the light", she confronts Najara who admits it. They then fight, with Najara telling Xena, "The light will triumph, Xena." "Quit preaching and fight!" Xena growls.
Najara actually beats Xena in a fair fight. Then follows an intense scene when, after Najara knocked Xena out, she is about to kill her; Gabrielle throws herself over Xena's body:
- G: You'll have to kill us both.
- N: You don't understand, Gabrielle. That darkness inside her will destroy you one day.
- G: Put the sword down, Najara—you and I, we'll walk out of here together.
- N: You're just saying that to protect her.
- G: Xena's dark side frightens me. I need to move on, but I could never live with someone who killed her. There would be no going back from that.
Najara sighs and gives in, and Gabrielle walks out with her, leaving Xena's broken body unconscious on the ground.
After Xena wakes up, she spits out a tooth: "I hate that." Turning to speak to the little kid who's watching her, she says, "I got my butt whipped, didn't I?" The kid nods & agrees. "Well, it serves me right for trusting someone who talks about being good all the time." Xena's mistrust of religious faith and spiritual devotion has been borne out again.
Reflecting (literally in a mirror as well as mentally), Xena says, "You know what? She's a tough girl — but she's got a weakness. It's the same one I've got." The scene shifts to Gabrielle.
As Gabrielle confronts Najara, she muses that Xena only kills when necessary, and turns people over to the local government for trials; Najara wonders how that's better than when she only kills evil people. Gabrielle says but you can mistakes and Najara responds with the "kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out" argument: "You're right, Gabrielle. I'm sure I've made mistakes, before. But, all I've done is send them to the light. The eternal powers will correct any mistakes I've made." Their discussion is interrupted by a man screaming; Najara runs out to see what's going on, and Xena pops into the picture.
They really played up the rivalry between Xena and Najara over Gabrielle. Earlier Xena was clearly jealous when seeing Gabby walking along the lake with Najara. When Xena & Najara first face off, Najara clearly says that Gabby is hers now. Xena says to Gabby: "Come on!" and Najara responds: "No! Gabrielle has turned to the light; she's my responsibility now. As you said yourself: you hurt her. That's not going to happen again." Then in their final battle, Xena's dialog plays up that jealousy, again, in a "we two tough girl tops can talk about our girlfriend" kinda way:
- N: Do you expect me to believe you're going to let her die?
- X: Well, let's just see, shall we? I just asked her to come with me right now and you know what she said? She said she'd rather stay here and try to reform you. Seems that your zealotry is less scary than my dark side. Sniveling ingrate. But if I can't have her, nobody's gonna have her. It's part of that drastic change you talked about — and it's sure gonna change my destiny.
- N: I knew you were no good for her.
Fighting, Xena adds:
- X: You see, it's a little more difficult with a millstone like her around your neck, isn't it? You probably wouldn't care if one of your soldiers died. They'd just go up to that big, old light in the sky. But you might miss Gabrielle, huh?
Parting, Xena asks Najara:
- X: Did you tell her about the vision? [Xena's vision that she and Gabrielle would die together]
- N: No. That would hurt her, and I don't ever want to do that. That's your job.
Xena stares at her a moment, turns and walks off with Gabrielle.
