Barbara Gowdy is a Canadian writer and a member of the Order of Canada.
Although her work is largely in the mainstream, it includes the novel The White Bone, which is told from the point of view of elephants.
Two of her works have been adapted into feature films. The short story "We So Seldom Look On Love" was made into the movie Kissed (1996), by Lynne Stopkewich, and the novel Falling Angels was made into a film of the same title, directed by Scott Smith, in 2003.
