Robert E. Howard was a SF writer best-known for his character Conan the Barbarian (aka "Conan the Cimmerian). As such, he was influential in the development of the sword and sorcery genre.
Howard committed suicide in 1936, after battling lifelong depression.
Major female characters included:
- Red Sonya of Rogatino - female warrior, the prototype for Marvel's Red Sonja
- Dark Agnes de la Fere - female warrior
- Bêlit - a female pirate in Queen of the Black Coast
- Valeria - a lesbian warrior
