Banner of Souls is a deeply weird novel by Liz Williams, published in 2004 and shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award and nominated for the Phillip K. Dick Award.

In a far future, genetic alteration, cybernetic technology, and weird fantasy-esque technologies ("haunt-tech") have created all-female societies.

Major characters:

  • Lunae - growing girl with special powers
  • Yskatarina Iye - an assassin from the far asteroid colonies
  • Dreams-of-War - a warrior from the Mars Matriarchy, sent to guard Lunae, and implanted with "maternal instinct" to help her job
