For the character, see Harry Potter (character).

Wildly popular series of fantasy novels by J.K. Rowling.

The Harry Potter books have become a publishing phenomenon, selling hundreds of millions of copies world-wide, and spurring various adaptations and tie-in franchises.

They are primarily aimed at children, albeit not to the exclusion of adults, but each successive volume follows the main character's maturation over one year, and the series takes on a progressively darker tone.

Six volumes have been released so far. The seventh, and final volume, which J.K. Rowling recently finished writing, will be published in July 2007.

The Novels

The Movies

The first five Harry Potter novels have been adapted for the cinema, and the sixth one is slated to be released in 2008.

Criticism

  • Ruthann Mayes-Elma, Females and Harry Potter: Not All That Empowering (2006)
  • Ursula K. Le Guin: Rowling gave the "whole fantasy field a boost." "I didn't feel she ripped me off, as some people did, though she could have been more gracious about her predecessors. My incredulity was at the critics who found the first book wonderfully original. She has many virtues, but originality isn't one of them. That hurt."[1]
