Domestic violence, the 20th century term given to intra-family and intra-sexual-partner violence, has been a long-standing tool by which men enforce patriarchal norms and power structures over women, children, and other subordinates in their families and intimate relationships. The concept of domestic violence is not limited to male-female relationships in which the male is the aggressor, however; domestic violence can occur in any intimate or familial relationship.
