Revision as of 06:26, 26 February 2009

For topics of particular interest to the FSFwiki we are developing a limited number of special resources that combine navboxes, lists and indexes, and categories to gather together information on a particular topic.

See:

The list is currently "limited" because we are still trying to figure out how best to organize and develop these; how much we can push templating; how many are too many; the best uses of this or that feature of the software; and so on. So right now we have a limited number of high-priority topics that we are using to experiment with this concept. It may or may not be scalable, and if we need to change the model, having just a few of them will make it easier to change the model.

Propose other projects

Please propose other projects that you think might be good for a "special resources project". Some projects may need full-scale list/navbox/category treatment; other projects may work best with a simple list or navigation box. List the need you're trying to address, and any ideas you have about how to address it, and any problems you can see with doing it.

Make your proposal here (Proposal 01 for first proposal) and use the below format to write up the proposal for discussion.

Example:

Need: (the original person should describe the need she's trying to address)

  • It's difficult to find information about feminist utopias.

Proposal: (the original person should make some kind of proposal that can be discussed, and sign it with four tildes (~~~~))

  • I propose an infobox for feminist utopias. LQ 09:22, 30 April 2007 (PDT)

Problems: (the original person should list out any problems she's already anticipated might come up for discussion)

  • Should the infobox be just on the names of the societies or planets? Or should it be just on the works that have a utopia?
  • What if it seems like a dystopia to someone? Tepper's The Gate to Women's Country has sometimes been described as a "utopia" and sometimes as a "dystopia" -- how to handle these edge situations?

Comments: (here everyone can make their comments. the original person should respond to the comments, but will hopefully let other people chew on the problems before stating her responses and opinions -- to facilitate more discussion and more opinions coming in)

  • why not just a list? --Some user
  • i like categories as tags --UserTwo
  • This is a Very Bad Idea because some works will be just tagged "utopian" and "dystopian" and it will create chaos. --UserThree
  • Hmm, I like Some user's idea of doing a list; then people can describe both the aspects they think are utopian and dystopian and we don't have to worry about "picking" one for the categories. --UserFour
  • I didn't think about a list -- good idea! LQ 09:22, 30 April 2007 (PDT) (original proposer)
