Kareen Koudelka is the youngest of the four Koudelka sisters. Her older sisters are Delia, Martya, and Olivia. Her parents are Droushnakovi, who was bodyguard to the young Cordelia Naismith, and Commodore Koudelka.

She received a scholarship granted by Cordelia Naismith to study on Beta Colony for one year. During that year, she fell in love with Mark Vorkosigan. The trials and tribulations of the young couple, when they return to Kareen's home planet of Barrayar for Emperor Gregor's wedding, and (perhaps more importantly) Kareen's internal struggle to maintain her independence while continuing to stay close to her more conservative parents, form a major subplot of A Civil Campaign. In the end, Kareen invents a new relationship structure, individually suited to her situation with Mark.
