Compulsory heterosexuality is the notion that patriarchy is built on heterosexual access to women by men. Political lesbianism, therefore, offers a feminist response to patriarchy: Redirection of women's energy away from men towards women, and deconstruction of the patriarchal myths of heteronormativity.

The term comes from Adrienne Rich's 1980 essay "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence".
