Daphne Du Maurier is a well-known 20th century novelist. Her best known works are Rebecca (1938), a neo-gothic novel that was inspired by and retold Jane Eyre, and "The Birds", both of which were made into films by Alfred Hitchcock. (Rebecca (1940); The Birds (?).
