Jane Austen was a novelist, most famed for her novel Pride and Prejudice. She published anonymously as did most women in England at that time.
Austen significantly influenced the development of the romance genre (particularly the Regency romance) and the comedy of manners.
Her novel Northanger Abbey was a parody of Ann Radcliffe's then-popular Gothic novels, particularly The Castle of Otranto. Northanger Abbey was first written in 1798; revised in 1803 by Austen; posthumously revised in 1817 by Austen's brother Henry; and finally posthumously published in December 1817.
