Susan Foreman is a fictional character from Doctor Who, played by Carole Ann Ford.

She is the Doctor's granddaughter, and a Gallifreyan (though the series did not establish their species until after her departure from it). The last name "Foreman" is a pseudonym taken from a sign for the junkyard where the Tardis was parked.

She appeared to be a teenaged human girl, and while staying on Earth in London in 1963 she attended the local Coal Hill School, where her peculiar behaviour attracted the attention of two of her teachers, who followed her home and discovered that she lived in the Tardis. Unwilling to let them go after this discovery, the Doctor set the Tardis in motion, and they all ended up stuck travelling in the capricious space-time ship together.

Susan and her teachers are considered to be Doctor Who's first three companions, and Susan was the first to leave the series.

Sometimes credited with inventing the name Tardis. (Series continuity is fuzzy on the word: in "An Unearthly Child", she says she made it up, but the later expansion of the show's canon may implicitly retcon her invention the word, or require a lot of ingenuity to integrate it.)

Carole Ann Ford reprised the role of Susan for the 20th anniversary Doctor Who special "The Five Doctors" in 1983.
