Author of many stories, largely or all fantasy. Particularly noted for the Valdemar series stories, including the Vanyel trilogy, a beloved and angst-filled teenage coming out story.

Lackey has several major series of works, including a fantasy world (Valdemar), an urban fantasy world (the elf series), and an urban New Age fantasy for mysteries. Her works are generally non-sexist and include strong female characters. In addition, she is very gay-positive and tries to create an awareness of sexism and sexual assault.
