Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman, is the latest companion on Doctor Who, who joined the new series in the episode "Smith and Jones", in 2007, receiving second billing in the opening titles, after David Tennant.
She is a human medical student from present-day London, who was studying to become a doctor when she met the Doctor.
Her studies have been put on hold while she travels through space and time with him.
Martha has an unrequited crush on the Doctor, but she does not hesitate to confront him when he is evasive of her questions, and has firmly negociated her position aboard the Tardis after the Doctor's offer of "just one trip" turned into a series of adventures.
Notes
Freema Agyeman previously played another character named Adeola in the episode "Army of Ghosts". Martha made a brief reference to her "cousin Adeola" in the episode "Smith and Jones".
