Plot plus spoilers

Local people are tyrannized by raiding bandits led by an old enemy of Xena's, Cortese; it turns out that Cortese is both the king and the bandit-leader. He has a nice gig: Growing rich off heavy taxes on the people, which he justifies by local fear of the bandit-raiders. A nice commentary on how people become kings.

We also meet Xena's older brother, Toris.

Nice moments in the Xena-Gabrielle relationship: Gabrielle resisting Xena's attempt to send her off, giving Xena a lecture; Xena suppresses a smile. After the lecture Gabrielle stalks off, telling Xena's brother, "I'm sorry you had to witness that," giving the exchange the perfect air of a domestic dispute.

When bound, Xena ejects a breast dagger -- causing it to fly from its hiding place, over her head; she catches it behind her and frees herself.
