Le Deuxième Sexe (1949) (best known in English as The Second Sex) is a major feminist work by Simone de Beauvoir.
It reviews women throughout history, and their treatment as the "other" or "second" sex. de Beauvoir's contribution in Le Deuxième Sex has been significant: The notion that there is a defined norm, and discriminated-against groups of people are measured against it, has been a key insight in much 20th century identity-based scholarship.
