L'Euguélionne

L'Euguélionne (1976) is a tryptich novel by Louky Bersianik, which tells the gospel of the visitation of the title character, an extra-terrestrial female, to the planet Earth in the 20th Century.

It is a superb critique of sexism in the French language, in Western culture and Québec society; it is a call for revolution, and masterpiece of literature.

Editions

Two English translations from the original French have been published.

• The Euguelionne (1976) English translation by Gerry Denis, Alison Hewitt, Donna Murray, Martha O'Brien. Translated the critiques of French linguistic sexism and gender marking literally, along with annotated explanations for English readers.
• The Euguelion (1996) English translation by Howard Scott; Montreal: Alter Ego Editions; winner of Governor General's Literary Award for translation. Adapted the critiques of French linguistic sexism and gender marking for the English language, finding examples of gender bias within English language use.
