A science fiction novel by Kate Wilhelm, published in 1976, it depicts the struggle of a woman scientist to protect her work from the influence of corporate greed and incompetence. In the course of the novel, her husband (also a scientist, and one of her co-workers) turns against her. He also rapes her. The book's original editor said he would not publish the book with the rape in it. Rather than rewrite it, Wilhelm withdrew the book and found another publisher for it.
