Kindred is a 1979 novel by Octavia E. Butler. The novel tells the story of Dana, an African American woman in an interracial relationship who is mysteriously thrown back in time to the slave-holding South (Maryland). In that time, she has some role to play in the lives of Rufus and Alice, a white slaveholder and a black slave, respectively. Dana is brought back repeatedly to rescue Rufus, and eventually is complicit in the forced sexual relationship between Rufus and Alice--which produces the child, Hagar, Dana's ancestor.
