Millennium is a three-season TV series that ran from 1996 to 1999, with a single additional "wrap-up" episode included in season 7 of "The X-Files. The show was created by Chris Carter to explore darker and more religious themes than "The X-Files".

Fictional backstory

"Millennium" is the story of principal character Frank Black, a former FBI investigator who was driven mad by his perceptions and insights into murderous psychosis. During his recovery --and as part of it -- he was recruited by "The Millennium Group", a group of former law enforcement investigators who consult on difficult-to-solve crimes. Over the course of three seasons, the series does a slow reveal of more details about the Millennium group; the conspiracy-like themes echo those of "The X-Files".

"Millennium" is ostensibly set in the same fictional universe as "The X-Files", although this was not apparent early on. However, there is such extensive discontinuity between the two shows that they effectively are in separate universes, with cross-over moments.
