New weird
New weird (or, more pretentiously, New Weird) is an SFnal genre.
Nick Mamatas, 2004:
- And New Weird? Well the thing to know if one wants to understand the New Weird is this: China Mieville, the prime exponent of New Weird (though it was M. John Harrison who coined the term) is under the discipline of the Socialist Workers Party (GB). The "New Weird" is his attempt to place his own fiction and some of the fiction contemporary with it within the party's political perspective.[1]
Wikipedia, 2007:
- [A] loose group of writers sometimes called New Weird who consciously attempt to move fantasy away from commercial, genre clichés of Tolkien epigons.[2]
