Ekaterin Vorsoisson (full name Ekaterin Nile Vorvayne Vorsoisson, later Vorkosigan) first appears in Komarr, a late novel in the Vorkosigan saga. She is living on the planet Komarr, married to Tien Vorsoisson and mother to Nikki Vorsoisson. Tien is a Barrayaran administrator in the Komarran terraforming project.

Ekaterin's uncle is Lord Vorthys, an Imperial Auditor. He and Imperial Auditor Miles Vorkosigan come to Komarr to investigate a mysterious death in the terraforming effort. They stay in Ekaterin and Tien's home. As the story progresses, Ekaterin begins to learn that Tien is dishonest. When Miles asks Tien for a late night tour of a suspicious facility, the result is that both Miles and Tien are captured and left outside in the unbreathable air, handcuffed to a railing a few feet from one another. Tien, who has been notoriously careless about his breath mask, dies during this ordeal, leaving Ekaterin a widow.

Miles, who has been falling in love with Ekaterin from first meeting her, acts as a friend in the period after Tien's death, most notably helping Ekaterin get Nikki gene-cleaned, so that he will no longer be in danger from the genetic disorder Vorzohn's Dystrophy, which Tien refused to acknowledge.

In A Civil Campaign, Miles courts Ekaterin, first disastrously and then successfully.
