Serenity (Firefly pilot)
Serenity is the first episode of the TV series Firefly. (See also Serenity (film), the movie that came after the TV series.)
Gender in the episode
Allecto did a word count and found that men spoke 458 words and women spoke 175 words; a ratio of 2.6:1.[1] Commentators noted that there six major male roles in the episode, and three and a half major female roles in the episode (River Tam enters the episode halfway through), a ratio of 1.7:1. Thus, weighing the number of words per gender with the number of characters of each gender, the disparity of words per character was less disproportionate than when counting only the number of words per gender.
Another way of figuring it is to count words per (gendered) character: Total words for male characters, 458; average words per male character, 76.3. Total words for female characters, 175; average words per female character, 50.
