The magical girl subgenre of anime and manga features young girls with superhuman or magical abilities or identities who must fight evil to protect the earth, often with a secret identity. Older magical girls were known in Japan as majokko, literally "witch girl".

"Sally, the Witch" (Mahoutsukai Sally) from 1966 is considered the first mahō shōjo anime.

Occasionally there are transgendered versions of the magical girl; the magical boy.
