Canon has two major meanings on the FSFwiki:

  • Canon (fiction) - The set of works which make up the "official" storyline; "officialness is usually prescribed by the original creators from works they create or authorize, but not all such works constitute "canon"; canon is principally distinguished from non-canon, as in fan creations such as fan fiction or non-canonical episodes within a story.
  • Canon - A set of works agreed by a group of people to represent something. "The Canon" often refers to the set of Greek, Roman, and English literature that self-appointed arbiters of quality and influence deemed to be the most influential in Western civilization and "best". The plural, "canons" describes a multiplicity of canons.
