Commentary
Described as "a fantastical Western," this is a lovely story about strong women in the turn-of-the-century West. The protagonist, Mrs. Linger, falls in love with Martha Moody, the redheaded woman-of-size who keeps the town's general store. She is inspired, as Pat Robertson would say, to leave her husband, become a witch, and turn to lesbianism. Well, she doesn't actually become a witch, but she does become a writer, of fantastical and amazing stories. Marvelous characters.
From The Women's Press catalog: "An acclaimed magical realist lesbian love story centering on Martha, 'a magic woman, huge past the point where size can be considered anything less than a blessing of range to the human world'. 'A lush comic masterpiece,' Daily Mail; 'Stinson's ability to describe fat women erotically, sexually and passionately is one of the reasons Martha Moody is a groundbreaking work,' Bay Windows; 'The best book yet from The Women's Press,' Gay Times."
