This category should be used only for people who are known to be dead but whose actual year of death is ambiguous or unknown in the historical record. Please accompany it with the appropriate approximate decade or century category.

However, people are often accidentally categorized as "unknown" when really the information is "known" but simply "missing" from the FSFwiki. These people should be properly recategorized as Category:Year of death missing. Please move if appropriate.
