Sexism in SF makes itself manifest in numerous ways:

  • a dearth of representations of female characters
  • gendered representations of characters in occupations
  • gendered representations of characters in relation to their sex roles
  • shallow or stereotyped representations of female characters
  • unequal recognition of female creators
  • unequal access to opportunities for female creators
  • incidents of sexual violence
  • sexist language
  • unequal access of fans, for instance, inadequate attention to nursing rooms, childcare, etc.
