Nebula Award
The Nebula Award is given each year by the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) for the best science fiction or fantasy fiction published in the US during the prior two years.
Nebulas are awarded for
- Novels - work of 40,000+ words
- Novellas - works of 17,500+ but < 40,000 words
- Novelettes - works of 7,500+ words but under 17,500 words
- Short stories - works of < 7,500 words
- Scripts - for movies, TV or radio shows, or plays
- Dramatic scripts - Awarded since 1999.
Each work is eligible to qualify for the ballot for one year following its date of first publication in the US. SFWA members "recommend" the work for the Nebula ballot. When a work receives ten recommendations (within that year), it goes to the preliminary ballot. SFWA members vote on the preliminary ballot and narrow it to a final ballot of about five works in each category. A Nebula jury can add additional works to the ballot. SFWA members vote on the final ballot. Consequently, a work can be published in one year; receive its nominations mostly in the following year; and be voted on in the year after that. So a 2004 publication might receive a 2006 Nebula.
