Love & Monsters
"Love & Monsters" is an episode of Doctor Who that first aired 17 June 2007. It was written by Russell T. Davies and directed by Dan Zeff.
Summary
The episode is told from the point of view of a young man named Elton, whose obsession with the Doctor has led him to a group of like-minded individuals with whom he enjoys spending time. The group's activities take a sinister turn with the arrival of the mysterious Victor Kennedy.
Notes
The episode is an overt satire of fandom and a metatextual commentary on fannish interest in the Doctor.
David Tennant and Billie Piper only appears in a few scenes of "Love & Monsters". It was an episode designed to give the series' stars a reprieve in their filming schedule, as "Blink" would also be in the next season.
Ursula's fate
This episode features a grotesque scene that is played for humour towards the end.
The Doctor has rescued Ursula, Elton's tentative girlfriend, from death by absorption, by reconstructing her into a face on a slab of pavement.
- Doctor: "Elton! Fetch a spade!"
We return to a view of Elton's flat, as he speaks into the camera, narrating.
- Elton: "Even then, after all that, the Doctor saved me one last time." (emphasis added)
Elton picks up the heavy slab and holds it on his lap.
- Elton: "Here she is."
- Ursula: "Could be worse. At least I'll never age. And it really is quite peaceful. You'd be surprised."
- Elton: "It's a relationship, of sorts. We manage. We've even got a bit of a love life."
- Ursula: "Oh let's not go into that."
- Elton: "And I don't care what anyone thinks. I love her."
And Ursula smiles up at him from his lap.
