A juried award for best science fiction novel of the year. Between 1973 and 2006, first place was given to a woman three times: In 1987, Joan Slonczewski won for A Door Into Ocean; in 1988, Connie Willis won for Lincoln's Dreams; and in 2003, Nancy Kress won for Probability Space.
