- Sam & Dean time travel to the 19th century American West to kill a phoenix and capture its ashes, so that they can kill "Eve", the progenitor of the various supernatural monsters (vampires, werewolves, etc.).
- Portrayal of women: De-romanticizes the whore, a common female character trope in works featuring the American West. The "whore" here is older (than her 20s), fatter (than the late-20th century thin ideal), and visibly diseased.
