The modern romance story centrally features a romance between the protagonist and, the vast majority of the time, one other character.

Thoughts on the modern romance:

  • escapist fiction for women
  • a quasi-feminist reclamation of patriarchy the way women would want it (cite needed)

Romance stories show up in many forms.

  • Regency romances
  • historical bodice-rippers
  • romantic mystery
  • quasi-porn
  • science fiction or fantasy romance
  • queer romance

A few authors have done reclamations or turn-arounds of common romance plots.
