This mythic short story by Ursula K. LeGuin approaches the increasing speed of life, both physical and metaphorical, from the point of view of stationary trees.

The story was first published in 1974 in Orbit 14, edited by Damon Knight; it was reprinted in LeGuin's short story collection The Wind's Twelve Quarters (1975), and republished in Buffalo Gals and Other Animal Presences in 1987.
