Alien

An alien, in an SFnal context (which this is) refers to an extra-terrestrial form of life.
The existence of alien life in reality is still unconfirmed, although astronomers keep making encouraging discoveries on the subject, such as methane on Mars and new exoplanets.
But the topic has long been a staple of both philosophical debate and of the SF genre, whether they aliens are little green men abducting humans to do experiments on them, saviours of humanity coming to rid us of our evil ways, or simply a confirmation that we're not alone in the universe.
