Carnivàle (TV series)

Carnivale is a Depression-era TV series that ran from 2003-05, It takes place in the American West with fantastic elements.

Toni Graphia suggested a lesbian story for the show, but met with "some homophobia in my own writers room. 'It was like this big wall of resistance,' she said. 'This actually got said to me: "Back in the '30s, they didn't have lesbians."'"
