Category:Identities

This category gathers subcategories of people and characters, and relevant articles and bibliographies, about people's identities. Identities here include ethnicity, gender, sexual identities, disabilities, class, strong religious or political identities and beliefs. Identity often includes elements of self-labeling. Identities almost always affect labeling by others and play a role in placement along social hierarchies; even where self-identity and identity imposed are not congruent.

Identity is distinguished from status, whether legal or biographical (such as nationality, living person, historical era); and from occupations, activities, and accomplishments -- the things people do (such as language they write in, occupation). Of course any of these other categories may form the basis of an identity, and in many instances, the categories may be fluid, or may offer options or force choices of "passing".
