Internet drama is a term used to describe intense controversial discussions that pull in many participants and take place in public. It often is heightened by strong difference of opinion between members of the same community or by the complications of personal relationships and can be emotionally hurtful to its participants. As outsiders to the community begin to take note of the drama, semi-private communities not used to public scrutiny may experience unwelcome attention. Internet drama is sometimes framed as essential cultural activism, a spectacle, as a performative act, or all at once.
