Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence is a 1980 essay by feminist and poet Adrienne Rich. It named and described "compulsory heterosexuality" as the requirement that women engage in relationships with men, and offered (political) lesbianism as a feminist response and a critique.
