Character sketch

Harry Potter is an English orphan who was raised by his aunt's family until his eleventh birthday, when he discovers his magical birthright and is invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to become a wizard, and when he also learns of the evil wizard, Lord Voldemort, who murdered his parents but failed to kill him when he was an infant.

The books follow Harry's schooling at Hogwarts and his coming of age, as well as the struggle Harry and his friends in the magical world wage against the return of Voldemort and Voldemort's followers, the Death Eaters. During the summers between school terms, Harry must return to live with his aunt's family, the Dursleys, in the muggle (non-magical) world, where he is forbidden to practice magic until he reaches maturity.

He is usually described as a skinny boy with unruly black hair. He is white, he has green eyes, wears glasses, and bears a distinctive, lightning-shaped scar on his forehead.

His best friends are Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
